Heat Your Home with the Sun
Passive solar design to heat your home is old news. So why aren't more builders using passive solar design? Most likely because few home buyers are asking for it. The August/September 2006 issue of Mother Earth News focuses on solar power. The article Go Solar and Save Big! discusses passive solar design for both warm and cold climates and gives resources for those that want more information.
Another article in the magazine, which I don't see on-line, gave several useful websites for those considering home energy improvements.
- Tax Incentives Assistance Project, tax credits for home energy improvements in 2006 and 2007 (Congress may extend the credits)
- DSIRE, Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy
- Recommended insulation levels at the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy website of the U. S. Department of Energy
- Energy Star, information on doors, windows, metal roofs, etc.
- Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association, directories of qualifying heat and water heating equipment.
- Solar Rating and Certification Corporation, certifies solar water heaters
